MasterChef Champion Gareth Baty Comes to Refuge for One Night Only

Manchester, clear your Wednesday night.

On Wednesday 7 October, we’re welcoming MasterChef: The Professionals 2026 champion Gareth Baty to Refuge for an exclusive charity dinner in support of Eat Well MCR.

For one night only, Gareth will join forces with Refuge Head Chef Cameron Tetlow to create a seriously special multi-course menu packed with bold flavours, brilliant local produce and plenty of the creativity that carried Gareth all the way to the MasterChef title.

From Cumbria to the MasterChef kitchen

Originally from Cumbria and now based in Greater Manchester, Gareth is the self-taught chef behind private dining business The Wandering Cumbrian.

Earlier this year, he took on 31 professional chefs before being crowned the 2026 MasterChef: The Professionals champion. Now, he’s bringing his food to Refuge for one exclusive night.

So, what’s on the menu?

The evening begins with a trio of canapés: curried goat pastilla, beef and beer bonbon and coal oil turnip tartare.

Next comes Holy Grain sourdough with burnt onion butter, followed by mushrooms with set miso custard and winter truffle.

The fish course brings together lobster, tiger prawn, scallop and langoustine, served with green apple, kefir and trout roe.

For the main event, there’s Herdwick lamb, featuring lamb rack, Madras lamb shoulder and tandoori kofta with aubergine pickle and spiced lamb sauce.

And because no dinner like this should end quietly, dessert is a barley miso and dark chocolate cigar, served with fermented bramble, salted milk ice cream and pulled chocolate.

Great food doing some good

This dinner forms part of Eat Well Do Good Month, with 20% of proceeds from the evening going directly to Eat Well MCR.

The Manchester charity brings together chefs, restaurants and hospitality businesses to provide chef-made meals for people experiencing food poverty across our city.

It means your night out will help put good food into the hands of people who need it most. That’s something worth raising a glass to.
