Lion King exhibition

We’re super excited to unveil our new gallery curated with Disney Theatrical Productions, Behind the Scenes at Disney’s The Lion King. Our collaboration is running to coincide with the hit production playing just over the road at our neighbours, the Palace Theatre. The images on display showcase different aspects of the landmark musical, from the unique masks and puppets to the sets, make-up, and the award-winning costumes. And, of course, the exhibition is free to view, so pop in any time and take a behind-the-scenes look at what makes The Lion King musical so spectacular.

The photography captures the stunning artistry of the production lead by a team of designers who drew on diverse cultural influences to recreate the rich colours and vast expanses of the African savanna for the stage. Julie Taymor, one of the world’s most innovative directors, brought a vast array of disciplines to The Lion King, including extensive experience staging epic theatre and opera productions, exploring classic myths through ritualised puppetry, mask, and movement. The Broadway show’s full creative team, which won five Tony Awards® for its work on The Lion King, reunited in 1999 to recreate the show in London. And now they’ve come to Manchester!

Our exhibition is running alongside the production’s stay in Manchester, so you’ll be able to see it until 11 March 2023. If you fancy going to see the show itself, you can get tickets here.
