Meet the Team: Stephanie Mciver

Stephanie started her role as Head of Department at The Refuge just in time for the Christmas season in 2021. Her role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. But simply put, she oversees 10,000 sq. feet and everything (and everyone) in it. We caught up with her for a quick chat.

Tell us a little bit about where you’re from…
I was born in Scotland but moved down south to Kent when I was 14. Two years later, I left for North Wales, before settling down in the Liverpool area, where my parents are originally from.

What did you study and does that relate to your career?
Actually, I never went to uni. Instead, I’ve worked my way up in different venues over the years and now I run a whole department. I’ve gained qualifications here and there, but it was always the industry experience, and not the qualifications, that benefitted me most.

What’s your proudest moment?
It must have been watching two bartenders, that I trained from barbacks, going through to ‘The Best Bartender Award’ in the UK. That was a very emotional and proud feeling.

Can you share with us one thing most people don’t know about you?
I was a surveillance operative, a bodyguard, and a police officer in past — so don’t mess around with me!

What would be the theme song to your life?
Ain’t no mountain high enough by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell.

Working in the hospitality industry, it would be a cardinal sin not to ask a few food/drink questions. So, here we go…

What’s your all-time favourite item from the menu and why?
Lamb shawarma toastie — just try it! You’ll see why…

What’s your go-to drink when going out?
Tommy’s Margarita, no question about that.

What country is on your food and drink bucket list?
Hmm, that would have to be Italy. I love the culture, the food and the people.
